Synthesis and characterization of mixed ligand transition metal complexes
Abstract
Cationic N 3 Cl type mixed ligand complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), C o(II), VO(II) and Zn(II) ion have been synthesized from dimethyl glyoxime and imidazole. All the compl exes were characterized by elemental analysis, mola r conductance, magnetic susceptibility data, IR, 1 H-NMR, UV-Vis., FAB-Mass and ESR spectral studies. The physico- chemical studies and spectral data indicate that al l the complexes have the general composition [M(DMG )IMCl]Cl (where, M= Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), VO(II) and Zn(II ), DMG = dimethyl glyoxime, IM = Imidazole). The IR , UV-Vis., magnetic susceptibility and ESR spectral data of th e complexes suggest that all the complexes are tetr ahedral geometry around the central metal ion except VO(II) complexes which exhibit square pyramidal geometry due the presence of axial oxygen. The molar conductance dat a confirm the mono-cationic nature of the complex i ons. The effect of redox potential on metal ion by the ligan d environment is studied by cyclic voltametric meas urements. These redox studies of copper complex suggests that the ligand system stabilises the unusual oxidation states Cu(III) and Cu(I) under electrochemical condition. The met al complexes were utilized to test the in vitro ant imicrobial activities, which gave good results in the presence of metal ion than the free ligands against the dif ferent species of microorganisms .
