Decolourisation of a dye by green method

Abstract

Effluent from dyeing units contains unused dyes. Th ese dyes pollute soil fertility and various water r esources such an pond water, lake water, river water and well wat er. Hence it is necessary to remove or decolourise the dyes. Dyes can be bleached by several methods such as che mical methods, Bio chemical methods and Electro che mical methods. Red 3B dye has been decolourised by electr ochemical methods. Electrolysis was carried out in an undivided cell, in presence of sodium chloride, usi ng graphite cathode and platinised titanium anode. The colour intensity was measured [optical density (OD)] befor e and after decolouriation. Decolouriation efficien cy (DE) was measured. Decolourisation efficiencies of various a nodes such as Platinised Titanium and mild steel ha s been compared. UV visible absorption spectra have been r ecorded for dye solution before decolourisation and after decolourisation. Since electrochemical method is us ed, the reaction can be started and stopped at will . Water is used as solvent. Toxic chemicals are not used. This is an environmental friendly method. Hence this pr ocess can be considered as a green approach .
